The Long Beach City College baseball team rallied late to secure a 3-2 walk-off victory over LA Pierce College on Friday afternoon.
The Long Beach City College baseball team rallied late to secure a 3-2 walk-off victory over LA Pierce College on Friday afternoon.
Trailing 2-0 in the sixth inning, the Vikings found their spark when second baseman Alejandro Rosas grounded out to shortstop, allowing left fielder Max Ghiglieri to cross home and cut the deficit in half.
In the eighth, Rosas came through in the clutch again, smashing a double to center field to bring first baseman Aaron Mingo home and tie the game at 2-2.
The Vikings sealed the win in dramatic fashion in the ninth. With center fielder Danny Rodriguez on second, right fielder Ryan Lopetegui put the ball in play, and Rodriguez capitalized on a Pierce error to cross home for the game-winning run.
Myles Dismute was dominant on the mound, tossing eight innings while allowing just one earned run on five hits with nine strikeouts. Niko Riera (1-0) closed out the game with a scoreless ninth, earning his first win of the season.
"We talked about offense yesterday. We didn't score a ton of runs, but our at-bats were definitely more competitive, and it paid off," said Head Coach Casey Crook. "Now, let's see if we can do that two days in a row and get our first winning streak of the year."
Dismute credited the team's energy and resilience for the victory. "I think as a team, we've been struggling lately, but we fought hard and stuck with our guys," he said. "Our dugout was locked in, our energy was there, and that made a huge difference in helping us get this win today."
With the victory, Long Beach looks to carry its momentum on Saturday, February 1 against LA Mission at 12 p.m. at the Vikings Baseball Field.
