MENIFEE - The Marauder softball team split a pair of games on Saturday easily defeating Rio Hondo College, 13-2, in five innings in the first game of the double header, followed by a tough loss to Mt. San Jacinto College, 2-1.
AVC's Dolly Stevens was 4-for-4 at the plate against Rio Hondo including a home run, double and three RBI. She also scored three runs. Teammate Erica Serfoss was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
"Our team has been doing very well hitting the ball. In the first game we were really seeing the ball and hitting the gaps. But in the second game we didn't seem to make the adjustments fast enough," Stevens said. "Our pitching was very good today. Mia (Acosta) and Naelyse (Garcia) threw the ball very well."
The Marauders lost their offensive edge in the second game against Mt. San Jacinto. The only run AVC could muster against Mt. San Jacinto's Jena Chilson was an RBI double by Serfoss. Serfoss and Stevens combined for four of AVC's seven total hits.
With the score tied 1-1 entering the bottom of the 7th inning, Mt. San Jacinto was able to score the winning run in the bottom half of the inning off Garcia. Garcia pitched well allowing only two earned runs on only five hits.
"Unfortunately our bats went cold in the second game," Serfoss said. "But on the bright side our defense was solid and I thought our pitchers pitched well."
AVC's defense has been somewhat of its Achilles heel for them this season. Prior to Saturday's double header, the Marauders committed 14 errors in five games.
