SANTA MARIA, Calif. --- El Camino College recorded two wins in three games at the Spring Baseball Classic hosted by Allan Hancock this week in Santa Maria, Calif. The highlight of the week came in an 11-2 win over No. 3 Fresno on Wednesday.
WARRIORS 11, No. 3 FRESNO CITY 2
After surrendering an early home run, pitcher Cameron O'Neil settled in and had one of his best outings of the season on the mound while the offense erupted for 18 hits in an upset against No. 3 Fresno City.
O'Neil allowed a first-inning solo home run but then settled in to go seven innings and allow two runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out a career-high nine batters to get the win.
Meanwhile, the offense erupted again with 18 hits and 11 runs. Lucas Bonham and Matt Hammond each recorded four hits, three runs and three RBIs on the day. Bonham hit a two-run triple in the ninth while Hammond blasted a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
Slater Nunez and Gil Solis pitched in with three hits apiece while Dylan Mares went 2-for-4.
WARRIORS 3, CANYONS 1
Adrian Pineda returned to form on Thursday as he tossed seven innings of shutout baseball to pick up his fifth win of the season on the mound. He walked two and struck out seven. Nunez pitched the final two innings to pick up his fifth save of the year.
Offensively, Nate Torres drove in two runs without the benefit of a hit and Mason Martinez was 1-for-4 as he drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Solis and Nunez paced the offense with two hits apiece.
ALLAN HANCOCK 23, WARRIORS 14
The Warriors had a chance to go unbeaten on the week as they took a 12-3 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning. But the host Bulldogs would go on to score 20 unanswered runs thanks to a seven-run fourth and 10-run sixth inning to stun ECC.
The Warriors drew 10 walks on the day but the pitching staff surrendered 15 walks along with 19 hits, only two for extra bases.
Mares entered the game as a substitute at first base and hit his fourth home run of the season in his only credited at-bat while Hammond was 2-for-4.
The Warriors will return to conference play on Tuesday as they begin a critical three-game series against Cerritos, which currently sits second in the conference standings. The series begins Tuesday at Warriors Field with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
