Mt. SAC Falls Short in Close Game Against Grossmont College

In a highly competitive matchup, the Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo Team fell to Grossmont College, as Part of the Palomar Mini Tournament, with a final score of 9-8. The game featured a dramatic back-and-forth contest that kept spectators on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.

The first quarter set the tone for an intense battle, with Mt. SAC initially taking the lead with goals by Carolyn Kao, off an assist from Gianna Gomez, and Rachel Donahue assisted, by Salma Valle. However, Grossmont quickly responded, resulting in a 2-2 tie at the conclusion of the quarter.

In the second quarter, Mt. SAC reclaimed the lead with two consecutive goals from Gianna Gomez, both assisted by Carolyn Kao. Grossmont answered back with two additional goals leveling the score at 4-4 by halftime and setting the stage for a high-stakes second half.

Although Mt. SAC's Carolyn Kao opened the second half with the first goal, it was their only goal of the quarter. Grossmont capitalized with four goals of their own, building an 8-5 lead heading into the final quarter.

Mt. SAC fought back in the fourth quarter with two goals by Rachel Donahue and one goal by Carolyn Kao. With the game tied at 8-8 in the fourth quarter, Grossmont's Payge Miller scored the decisive last goal securing their 9-8 victory.

Standout performances included Carolyn Kao, who led Mt. SAC with three goals and four assists, and Gianna Gomez, who contributed two goals and three assists. Rachel Donahue also made a significant impact with three goals. Goalkeepers Bethany Dougherty and Keira Bozek combined for a total of seven saves.

This loss brings the Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo Team's record to 4-2. They will look to regroup as they compete at Pasadena City College on Wednesday, September 18, at 3:00 PM.
