Huskies End Skid, Nab 1st Conference Win

Huskies End Skid, Nab 1st Conference Win

East LA Women's Volleyball Head Coach Dr. Elliott Walker has known throughout the course of this season that navigating a freshman-heavy squad through a seaon severely affected by COVID would be a challenge to say the least.

Even as his team failed to win a set within their last 10 games, he saw gradual improvement that would eventually manifest itself on the scoreboard. And it finally did tonight, with the Huskies beating the Compton College Tartars in straight sets for their first SCC win: 25-7, 25-13, 25-9.

RH Nayeli Suales led the team in Kills with nine on 16 attempts with two errors. OH Katherine Chiquini and MH Megan Melendez each had seven kills, while LB Bianca Ramirez had a strong floor game with 30 assists, five service aces and six digs. MB Juliana Garcia led the team in Kill% with .625. Overall, the Huskies tallied 44 points, their highest single-game point total in October.

HUSKY BITS

  • A good deal of credit goes to the Tartars who not only played short-handed, but without any subs available for the whole game. For comparison, the Huskies only had nine players in uniform.

UP NEXT:

East LA looks to build upon tonight's win when they head down the road to Whittier to take on the Rio Hondo College Roadrunners next Wednesday, Oct 27 at 6pm. After that, they'll have four more regular season games in November (including a make-up road game against the Tartars) before SCC tournament play begins on November 12 at El Camino College.
