LA Mission Falls to Cerritos in Pitching Duel, 3-0

Pitcher's Duel Through Three Innings

Both teams were locked in a tight contest through the first three innings, with LA Mission's Natalie Ascencio (5-8) and Cerritos' Cortez (9-4) keeping opposing hitters off balance. Ascencio allowed just three hits over six innings, striking out seven while issuing two walks in a solid outing. However, errors proved costly for the Eagles.

Cerritos Breaks Through in the Fourth

Cerritos got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after a defensive miscue by LA Mission. With Ayiana Cardenas on base, a throwing error allowed her to come around and score, giving Cerritos a 1-0 lead. The Falcons capitalized on the mistake and never looked back.

Cerritos Extends the Lead in the Fifth

The biggest hit of the game came in the bottom of the fifth when Morgan Fontela delivered a clutch two-run double to left-center, scoring Marley Cortez and Cardenas to extend the lead to 3-0. That would be all the offense Cerritos needed, as their pitching and defense held strong the rest of the way.

Eagles Struggle to Convert Scoring Chances

Despite recording four hits, including doubles from Arianna Ramirez, Adriana Hernandez, and Janae Arcos, the Eagles couldn't find a way to push a run across. Cortez dominated in the circle, striking out 12 batters in a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits and no walks.

Ascencio's Strong Outing Not Enough

While LA Mission's offense struggled, Ascencio pitched well, throwing six innings while allowing just three hits and two earned runs, but the Eagles' defense committed three costly errors that contributed to the loss.

Coach Hylland's Take

Head coach Chris Hylland acknowledged the team's effort but emphasized the need for cleaner play. "Natalie threw a great game and gave us a chance, but we have to execute better defensively and at the plate. We had our opportunities but just didn't capitalize."

Looking Ahead

The Eagles drop to 6-14 on the season and will look to bounce back in their next matchup. With conference play heating up, LA Mission will aim to clean up its mistakes and find more consistency at the plate.
