DenDekker's gem not good enough as Pirates fall to Dons

COSTA MESA -- A well-pitched game for both teams fell to the side of the Santa Ana Dons as the Orange Coast College baseball team lost, 4-0, on Friday at John Altobelli Park.

Both teams battled hard on the mound as OCC's Zach DenDekker went pitch for pitch with SAC starter Andrew Parker.

In the top of the third inning, DenDekker gave up a cluster of four hits and the Dons turned them into three runs and that would turn out to be all Santa Ana would need to preserve the win.

From there DenDekker was solid, pitching eight strong innings and holding the Dons to three runs on nine hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. The sophomore righty wiggled out of a couple of mid-game jams but battled all the way to the end, giving this Pirate teammates a chance to get the bats going.

But, Parker and relief pitcher Spencer Johnsen would have none of that conversation for the Dons. Parker (3-3) picked up the win, holding the Pirates scoreless over 5 2/3 innings on four hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Johnsen went the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts to collect his second save of the season.

Tyler Covington was OCC's lone offensive standout, going 2-for-2 and reaching base all four times he batted.

Coast will take on the Dons at Santa Ana College on Saturday, beginning at 12 p.m. to wrap up this week's three-game series. OCC's next home game takes place on Tuesday against Fullerton, beginning at 2 p.m.
