Riverside City College men's water polo opened the Cuesta College Tournament against two top-10 ranked teams in the California Community College Athletic Association American and dropped both games against eighth-ranked American River (17-6) and No. 9 Mt. San Antonio College (9-8) on September 27.
The Tigers move to 8-6 on the year after the matchups with American River (7-4) and Mt. SAC (9-7). They will close the weekend in Cuesta versus Long Beach and Cabrillo at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively, on Saturday, September 28.
Colby Martin kept RCC in the hunt for a win over Mt. SAC as he went off for four goals, three steals, and two assists. The Tigers fought out of a 3-0 hole in the opening three minutes. Martin scored a hat trick to help tie the game at 5-5.
Both teams traded goals and found themselves tied at 6-6 and 7-7 until Riverside took its first lead, 8-7, on a Luke Bills goal with 52 seconds left in regulation. Mt. SAC tied the game with 35 seconds remaining and then secured the win with a second left in regulation.
Bills finished with three assists and two goals, while Nathan Ferguson posted five field blocks and a goal and assist. Adrian Thompson posted five saves between the posts for the Tigers.
In the opener, Lennon Franklin led RCC with three steals and two goals, assists, and field blocks each. Martin added two assists and a goal, while Ferguson scored twice, as well. Leo Davis finished with five saves while splitting time in goal.
