Citrus College struck first and kept San Bernardino Valley College in check Tuesday, grabbing a 9-2 victory.

The Owls improve to 4-8 on the year, while the Wolverines drop to 5-8.

On the mound, four Owls combined for 13 strikeouts to keep the Wolverines at bay. Kaj James threw six innings and struck out nine batters, allowing just one run, to pick up the win.

Nicholas Santiago got things going with smart baserunning in the bottom of the second. After drawing a free trip to first, Santiago stole second and came home on an RBI single from Isaiah Pacheco. The Owls loaded the bases and Aaron Martinez laced a single to the gap in right-center to score two more, 3-0.

The Wolverines responded with one run in the top of the third, but Citrus capitalized once again with a big fifth inning.

With bases loaded and two outs, Devon Diaz drilled a base hit up the middle to score two runs. Pacheco stole home as Diaz stole second before Jordan Sheridan singled through the left side to send Diaz home, 7-1.

The Owls scored again in the sixth and seventh to hold a commanding 9-1 lead heading into the final inning. SBVC tried to put together a rally and scored one run, but the Owls secured the final out to grab the 9-2 victory.

Citrus is back at home on Saturday – weather permitting – to host Oxnard College at 1 p.m.
