In the eight years that he has been the Head Coach of the GCC Women's Basketball Team, Joel Weiss is typically stoic before, during and after the season regarding his teams, instead letting the play of the Lady Vaqs speak for itself.
One season after advancing to its first state championship game in school history and setting team records with a 30-win season and a 25-game winning streak in 2023-2024, Glendale finished this season with a 26-5 season and defeated San Diego Mesa and Cypress Colleges in the Southern California Regionals at GCC and beat Delta College in the State Tournament before falling to defending champion Orange Coast College in the state semifinals.
While winning a sixth straight conference title dating back to the 2018-19 season is significant, a closer look at the Lady Vaqs during the Joel Weiss era is nothing short of impressive;
- Glendale has an overall mark of 180-51 over the past eight years and is 84-14 in conference play and 72-6 during its conference championship run over the past six years.
- Over the past several years, GCC has been a mainstay among the top ranked teams in the state and Southern California.
- While the team is consistently represented with at least four of five players on the all-conference team like this year with freshman defensive standout and rebounding dynamo Shadel Ffrench earning co player of the year honors, Ffrench also made headlines by breaking the school record in rebounds in a game with 17 twice, 19, 22 and finally 26 in the final regular season game of the year against Citrus College Feb. 21. Malia Ulery, Sammy Velasquez, Lisette Mesa, and Ffrench all earned All-WSC First Team honors and Shushan Krikorian was named honorable mention with Ffrench earning First-Team All-State honors and Ulery earning third-team honors and a spot on the All-state Tournament Team.
- Speaking of honors, Coach Weiss has been named the WSC South Coach of the Year five times during the six-year title run including this season but he would be the first one to credit longtime assistant coaches Vicky Oganyan and Vincent De Guzman, also girls' basketball head coaches at John Burroughs and Village Christian High Schools, with helping to create strategies and stability to help keep GCC Women's Basketball among the best teams in the state.
- Lastly, players come and go but the transfer rates of the basketball players over the past several years is beyond impressive as many of them move on to four-year schools to not only play basketball but to stay on track to earn their degrees. Keeping up with the mission of Glendale College, it is really a testament to the quality of individuals who are recruited to play for the team and the efforts of many and the resources that the college provides that helps GCC Women's Basketball be a winner on and off the court.
