Caitlin Vinyard threw a four-hitter and drove in a run on Thursday, leading Moorpark to a 3-1 win over visiting SBCC in a WSC Gold Division softball opener.
Vinyard struck out 10 and walked three for the Raiders (11-3, 1-0). Madison McNamee (6-3) suffered the loss, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts.
Leadoff hitter Sydney Townes went 2-4 and Christal Vierra drove in the only run for the Vaqueros (12-6, 0-1) with an RBI double in the third that cut the deficit to 2-1. Ashlee Vasquez led the Raiders with two doubles and two RBIs.
"Madison threw a good game but we had too many strikeouts and pop flies," said SBCC coach Paula Congleton. "We basically gave ourselves nine at-bats."
The Vaqueros, who are nearing the end of a 12-game road trip, travel to L.A. Pierce for a WSC doubleheader on Tuesday at 1 and 3 p.m.
