The Knights went into the bottom of the 9th inning down by five, but they put together a 6-run rally to complete an 8-7 comeback win over previously undefeated Grossmont. San Diego City had five straight hits and Jeremiah Morgan then scored the winning run on a botched double play.
The Knights held a 2-1 lead after three innings, but Grossmont scored six runs over the next three innings to take a 7-2 lead.
Grossmont hit three home runs during Saturday's game, including two from Nico Newhan. His second homer brought in three runs in the top of the 6th to give the Griffins the 5-run lead.
San Diego City got runners in scoring position in both the 7th and 8th innings, but couldn't generate enough offense to add any runs.
The bottom of the 9th was a different story. Pinch hitters Anders Nilsson and Luke Rohen started the inning off by reaching after both getting hit by relief pitcher Nico Tomasello.
Isaac Valle advanced both runners on a ground out and then City's bats caught fire.
Anthony Felice singled in two runs to cut Grossmont's lead down to 7-4. Gavin Daley followed with a double to right field, which forced a pitching change.
Josh Ward came up next and hit a single to right field that allowed Felice to come home.
Daniel Tatis kept the rally going with a 2-RBI single that tied the game at 7-7 with still only one out. Tatis then got into scoring position on City's fifth consecutive hit, a single by Isaiah Alba.
After Morgan replaced Tatis at second base as a pinch runner, Cameron Breeze hit into what looked to be an inning-ending double play, but Grossmont shortstop Logan Aguilar's throw to first base for the second out of the play hit the ground and went past the first baseman.
That allowed Morgan to sprint home for the game-winning run with a big smile on his face. The Knights then erupted in a celebration that ended up in right field.
The victory snapped a 4-game losing streak and also handed Grossmont its first loss of the season.
