Cougars Sweep Pierce to Earn WSC Win

Women's Volleyball swept LA Pierce (25-15, 25-10, 25-19) to pick up their first Western State Conference (WSC)-North Division victory.  The Cougars were led by some big hitting local freshman.  Freshman Middle Blocker Meredith Donovan (Templeton HS) led the Cougars with 10 kills, while Opposite Hitter Whitney Thompson (Arroyo Grande HS) added nine of her own.  Returning Freshman Outside Hitter Christelle Mouret (Morro Bay HS) added seven more kills and terrorized the Brahmas with five service aces.  Mouret is 2nd in the State with 41 aces and opened every set on a run to give the Cougars the early advantage.  The Brahmas traded points early in the first set and only trailed 9-7, when the Cougars took their first big lead.  The Cougars took 13 of the next 20 points on their way to a first set win, 25-15.  Mouret did the early damage in the second set with seven straight points, as the Cougars took control of the match by reaching set-point at 24-8.  The Brahmas scored two more points, before Cuesta put the hammer down (25-10), but the Brahmas saved some fight for the final set.  Pierce kept the Cougars close and were at 18-15 when Cuesta finally pulled away to seal the victory, 25-19.

The Cougars improve to 9-5 on the season and 1-2 in the WSC.  They host LA Mission College next Wednesday in another WSC-North showdown (6 PM).
