COD Women’s Soccer shoots down the Eagles late, 4-1

COD (6-6-3; 2-3) got back on track with a hard-fought win against their neighbors, while the game was tied at the break, the Roadrunners turned the offense on blast in the second half, pushing past the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles (7-5-1; 1-3-1), 4-1.

In a series that, until the past five seasons, has been dominated by the Eagles, it was today's refreshing win that kept the streak of positive results for Desert. The Roadrunners fired out of the opening kick like a cannon as freshman forward Dalaina Johnson (Cathedral City H.S.) found freshman midfielder Amanda Cruz (Yucca Valley H.S.) in front of the net in the 4th minute to give the home side an early 1-0 lead. That lead was equalized in injury time at the end of the first half, tying the game at 1-1. In the 75th minute, sophomore defender Narali Lopez (Cathedral City H.S.) exploited a misplay by the Eagles and pounded a shot past the Eagles keeper to give Desert a 2-1 lead. Moments later, the Roadrunners added some insurance as sophomore midfielder Monserrath Bedolla Guzman (Thermal Coachella Valley) connected with one of the State's most prolific scorers, Johnson, who would not be denied, giving Desert a 3-1 lead. The Roadrunners would add an exclamation point to the victory with a goal by Bedolla Guzman in injury time in the second half on an assist by Johnson.

Desert played against the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles for the first time in program history in 1997 where the Desert has a 9-26-6 overall record against the Eagles. The Roadrunners have an 7-14-1 record against Mt. San Jacinto in the Coachella Valley. The next contest for Desert is on Tuesday, October 18th at home against the Chaffey Panthers of Rancho Cucamonga. The Roadrunners first took on Chaffey in 2002. Desert holds an overall record of 0-29 against the Panthers and a 0-14 record at home.
