Coalinga College Softball delivered an impressive performance on Friday, securing a doubleheader sweep against Cerro Coso Coyotes. The team dominated the first game with an 11-3 victory, powered by Bryton Loflin's four RBIs, and capped off the day with a thrilling 7-6 walk-off win in game two.
Game 1: Loflin's Big Bat Leads Coalinga to Victory
Falcon Softball wasted no time getting on the board in game one, capitalizing on a Coyotes error and an Esme Zuniga Romero groundout to take an early lead in the first inning. Ava Carlton extended the lead with an RBI single down the left field line in the second.
After the Coyotes briefly took a 3-2 lead, Niliah Gruver responded with a clutch single in the fourth to put Coalinga back in front. The momentum continued into the fifth inning when the Falcons exploded for five runs. Loflin delivered the biggest hit of the game, crushing a three-run homer to left field. Gruver followed with an RBI groundout to extend the lead.
Jenessa Sanchez earned the win, allowing just one hit over three scoreless innings. Alexis Espinoza started the game, giving up one earned run on four hits over three innings. Coalinga's offense was balanced, with Loflin, Gruver, Carlton, Breanna Cisneros, and Alex McDanell each collecting hits. The team also showed great discipline at the plate, drawing seven walks and stealing seven bases.
Game 2: Coalinga Rallies for Walk-Off Win
The second game was a back-and-forth battle, culminating in a dramatic walk-off single by Ava Carlton in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Falcons jumped ahead early, scoring in the first on a sacrifice bunt by Rylie Williams. In the third, Loflin and Williams each drove in runs to push the lead to 3-0. However, Cerro Coso responded with a three-run fourth inning to tie the game, then took a 5-3 lead in the fifth.
Coalinga fought back in the bottom of the fifth, reclaiming the lead at 6-5 thanks to key RBI singles from Gruver and Cisneros. Coso tied it again in the seventh, setting the stage for Carlton's game-winning hit.
Carlton also started in the circle for Coalinga, allowing no earned runs in 3.2 innings. Jenessa Sanchez and Alexis Espinoza pitched in relief to help secure the win. Offensively, Ayana Lopez and McDanell led the team with two hits apiece, while Loflin and Cisneros each drew two walks.
With their aggressive baserunning and clutch hitting, Coalinga College Softball secured a well-earned doubleheader sweep over Cerro Coso Coyotes. With the pair of victories, Coalinga College improves to 6-4 overall.
