Gonzales' No-Hitter Punctuates Sweep of Cuesta

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Allan Hancock's trio of unanswered late in the opening contest paved the way for a 6-3 victory in game one of its doubleheader at Cuesta College on Saturday afternoon before Matthew Gonzales shut down the Cougars with a no-hitter in the nightcap at Cuesta Baseball Field. Gonzales recorded just the 6th no-hitter in program history and first since 2003 in the second game of the day.

Jeff Ray led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 5-for-7 on the day while totaling five runs, three RBIs, two doubles, and being walked once.

GAME ONE: ALLAN HANCOCK 6, CUESTA 3

The Bulldogs got on the board first when a single from Jacob Ortega plated two in the opening frame. Jeff Ray doubled in the top of the third, which brought one runner home, but Cuesta evened the odds in the bottom of the frame. Hancock scored three unanswered runs to close the game, highlighted by Ortega's long ball over the fence in the top of the sixth. Joey Freitas also contributed to the late rally with an RBI single, while nimble base running by Trenton Pallas accounted for the other after capitalizing on an error by the Cougars.

Vander Hodges collected the win on the bump with a complete game. He scattered three hits and struck out three batters through seven innings of work.

GAME TWO: ALLAN HANCOCK 8, CUESTA 1

Cuesta struck first in the second game with an unearned run in the opening inning but was held scoreless through the remaining eight frames. Hodges got the rally started for the Bulldogs in the top of the 6th after blasting a two-run homer over the wall. Freitas and Ray both found the plate after taking advantage of a pair of Cuesta errors in the 8th inning. The Bulldogs closed the contest with four runs in the final inning, led by a pair of RBIs from Ray.

Gonzales punched out seven batters and walked two en route to his complete game, nine-inning no-hitter.
