Cougars Take WSC Opener over Oxnard, 19-3

Cuesta Baseball hosted Oxnard for their 2025 Western State Conference Opener and beat the visiting Condors, 19-3, in the first of their three meetings this week.  The Condors left the bases loaded in the first inning, which allowed the Cougars to grab the advantage on Designated Hitter Jacob Johnson's RBI-double in their first at-bat.   Johnson's bingle gave Cuesta the lead for the duration, as the Cougars added 15 more runs before the 5th inning.  Oxnard got on the board with the two runs in the 4th and another the next inning, while also stranding nine baserunners in the game.  Cuesta Starter KJ Henderson only went three innings, before handing a ten-run lead to the bullpen.  Reliever Marc Byrum was the first of three pitchers to be called from the pen and claimed the winning decision.  Third Baseman and leadoff batter AJ Martinez was one of six Cuesta Batsmen to enjoy a multi-hit game, and he put on a dazzling display with the bat by going 5-for-5 on the day, plus a walk.  He also drove in a game-high five runs and scored twice.  His partner on the left side of the infield, all-WSC Shortstop Victor Heredia, was on pace with Martinez.  Heredia only drove in two runs, but he also scored game-high four times.  Outfielder Jak Sinclair tied Martinez with a game-high 5 RBI, while also being one of Cuesta's six multi-hit performers.  Today, the Cougars, who are currently ranked #8 in the CCCAA Southern Region Poll, reached the .500 mark for the first time this season.  Cuesta Baseball is now 6-6 on the year and 1-0 in Western State Conference play.

The Cuesta Nine continue their series against the Condors in Oxnard on Thursday (2 PM), before returning to SLO and completing the week on Saturday (1 PM)
