Cuesta Baseball Falls to #3 Fresno City, 11-6; Hosts Merced on Friday

Cuesta Baseball shall wrap up the Cuesta/Hancock Spring Break Tournament when unranked Merced comes to SLO on Friday (1 PM). The Cougars are currently mired in a season worst three-game losing streak and a win over the Blue Devils would give them a boost going into the second half of their Western State Conference schedule.  After facing #7 Cypress and #3 Fresno City over the past two days, Cuesta will have a chance to square-up against another squad overlooked by the pollsters with a fellow unranked Merced.  The Blue Devils have also dropped their first two games in the tournament, after losing to Allan Hancock, 1-0, today and Canyons, 25-7, on Wednesday.

The Cougars fell to #3 Fresno City today, 11-6.  Both teams scored in both the 3rd and 5th innings, but the battle heated up after the Stretch.  The two teams were tied at 4-4 in the 5th inning, but the visiting Rams edged ahead with two runs in the 6th.  The bats went silent in the 7th, but Fresno broke the game open with five runs in the 8th, Cuesta countered with two tallies in their half of the 8th, but they could not catch the Rams.  With a scoreless 9th, Fresno City held on for the win, 11-6.  Both teams posted 10 hits in the game, while Fresno City committed three errors to Cuesta's one.  Fresno Starter Andrew Fragus was credited with the victory, while Reliever Ryan Napier earned a save, despite Cuesta Shortstop Justin Lemaster tying for a game-high three hits.  The setback dropped the Cougars to 13-12.
