
Cuesta Women's Volleyball opened its second season with a doubleheader against 2024 CCCAA Playoff team Hartnell. The visiting Panthers, who beat the Cougars in the program's inaugural season, were swept, 4-1 and 4-1, in today's twinbill. The Cougars, who were 4-16 in their debut campaign, are currently 2-0 on the season. Cuesta #1 pair of returning all-WSC Second Teamer Bailey Woodside and Freshman Emma Watkins, set the tone by sweeping their competition in both matches. The won 21-15 and 22-20 in the first match and improved in the second match by winning 21-17 and 21-13. Cuesta's second pairing of Brynn Bennett and Amelie Lo Jocano also completed back-to-back sweeps; 21-17, 21-14 and 21-18, 21-15. The twin triumphs also boosted Lo Jocano's Cuesta career victory record to nine matches. 2024 All-WSC Second Teamer Madelyn Freeman paired with Freshman Cayley Brown at the #3 pair and posted another double victory for Cuesta, although the Panthers pushed the second meeting into the tiebreaker to avoid a second sweep. Freeman and Brown won 22-20 and 21-14 in the first match, but fell, 17-21, to open the second match, before rallying to win the last two sets, 21-15 and 15-8. In the fourth position, Sophomore Alexis Waltz and Annika Layton also boasted a pair of victories but were also pushed to a third set in the first match, 21-13, 15-21, 15-12. The duo rebounded in the second round with a sweep, 21-19 and 21-15. Hartnell picked up both of their wins at the bottom of the ladder with wins at the #5 pairing over Rosita Menta and Hanne Porter in the first match, 21-16, 19-21, 15-4, and Menta with Nikki Gill in the second round, 21-11, 21-18. The Cougars are 2-0 on the season.
Cuesta's Sand Spikers return to action on February 7, when they travel to Huntington Beach for another doubleheader. The Cougars are set to play Golden West (10 AM) and LA Mission Club (Noon)
