SACRAMENTO--Feather River College and Sacramento City College took turns winning two very different games during a Thursday afternoon doubleheader between two of the top teams in the 3C2A North.
The Golden Eagles rode the pitching of starter Tanner Hail and the timely hitting of Kory Chu in game one for a 4-0 win, while the Panthers bounced back in a big way in game two for a 16-6 revenge.
Feather River will return home with a 5-1 record, as Friday's game with American River has already been postponed because of inclement weather.
In the opener, Hail didn't give up a hit until the third inning and would allow only two in 5.1 innings of work. The freshman from Reno walked three and fanned three in moving to 2-0 on the season. He has yet to give up a run in two starts.
Meanwhile, Hail's offense went to work right away. The first three Golden Eagle batters of the game laced singles--Dylan Marx, Anthony Cepeda and Chu, with the latter's base knock driving in the first run of the game. Chu added another RBI-single in the fifth inning, as did Zane Denton to make it 3-0. FRC tacked on one more run (unearned) in the ninth.
Feather River had six hits in the game, all singles.
Sacramento City, who a year ago ended FRC's season at the NorCal Super Regionals, had just four hits today against five Golden Eagle pitchers. In addition to Hail, Feather River's bullpen of Carl Colovecchio, Jayden Andrade, Gavin Moreno and Will Page-Allen combined to allow only two more Panther hits over 4.2 innings.
As smooth as game one went, game two was a differnt story. The Panthers put four runs on the scoreboard in the first inning and added three more in the third. SCC would go on to score in every inning except the second and the eighth. They would total 11 hits in eight innings. Ten different Golden Eagle pitchers saw action.
Feather River had seven hits in the game, which included two-run singles by Marx and Justin Robinson.
Next action now for the Golden Eagles will be in Rocklin against Sierra and the College of San Mateo, Feb. 6-7.
