Hosting their first match of the season, the Cerritos College beach volleyball team recorded a 5-0 win over Golden West College, but suffered a 3-2 setback against Ventura College at Rosie's Beach in Long Beach on Friday. The Falcons (2-2) will travel to Irvine Valley College next Friday to take on the host Lasers, as well as MiraCosta College.

Against the Rustlers, Cerritos picked up a pair of straight set wins, while they came out on two in the other two matches that went to a third set tie-breaker. In the #3 position, the tandem of sophomore Brisa Cortez (Schurr HS) and freshman Nayeli SalasOrtiz (Schurr HS) pulled out the first set, 21-18 and then cruised to a 21-4 win in the second set. As for the pair of freshman Herlinda Casanova (St. Joseph HS) and sophomore Juliette Casillas (La Serna HS), they had a quick win with 21-8 and 21-11 scores. It was the same for the #5 pair of sophomore Lillianna Peterson (California HS) and freshman Margaret Norton (La Mirada HS), who saw their first action of the season and posted a 21-6, 21-15 win.

At the top of the ladder, the top pair of sophomores Abby Gutierrez (Downey HS) and Aiyana Sierra (La Mirada HS) escaped the first set, 21-19 before a 16-21 loss in the second set send them to a tie-breaker. The  Falcons recorded the win with a thrilling 15-13 decision in the deciding set. The pairing of sophomore Leeya Rubio (Schurr HS) and freshman Josie Navarro (Sierra Vista HS) recorded a 21-14 win in their first set, but fell, 13-21 in the second set. The finished off the team sweep with their 15-6 win in the third set.

In taking on the Pirates, the Falcons earned wins in the #3 and #5 matches, with Cortez and SalasOrtiz securing a 21-19, 21-18 battle for a team point. A chance at the #5 position on the ladder resulted in a three-set win by sophomore Breanna Lizarraga (Paramount HS) and Evelyn Soto-Castro (Schurr HS) with their 21-10, 19-21, 15-11 victory.
