The Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) Bear Cubs secured their first Big 8 Conference win in commanding fashion, defeating American River College (ARC) on the road. ARC, recently ranked 14th in the state and 7th in the North in the 3CFCA Coaches Poll, entered the matchup with a 1-1 conference record, while SRJC was looking to bounce back from an 0-2 start.
The Bear Cubs wasted no time, striking first in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. Freshman pitcher Mia Avila was outstanding in the circle, throwing a complete game and allowing just one run on two hits. ARC managed to even the score in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Kaylah Adams, but SRJC quickly regained control.
In the top of the fifth, the Bear Cubs' offense erupted for seven runs, putting the game out of reach. Freshman standouts Mya Gonzalez (3 hits) and Ninu Elisara (2 hits) led the charge at the plate, helping SRJC secure a decisive victory.
With the win, SRJC moves to 1-2 in conference play. Up next, the Bear Cubs will host a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 and 2 p.m. against Sacramento City College, which currently holds the #8 state ranking and #4 spot in the North in the 3CFCA Coaches Poll.
