Cuesta Men's Water Polo finished the second day of the Cuesta Classic II the same way they did the first- WINNING! The Cougars cruised through the first day with comfortable wins over Grossmont, 17-13, and Western State Conference rival Ventura, 21-6 but were even more dominant on the second day. Cuesta opened the second day of competition by posting a 20-point decision against Chaffey, 25-5, before closing the tournament with a win over Rio Hondo, 19-7. The Cougars, who had just scored a respectable 50 goals in their previous four games, including a trio of setbacks, exploded for 82 goals to mark their largest scoring quartet of games since scoring 89 goals in the season-opening Merced Tournament. Returning all-WSC selection Andonis Petroutsas (pict-Mid) and Freshman Johnny Starr both added double-digits to their season scoring totals with 12 and 10 goals on the weekend, respectively. Cuesta Men's Water Polo is now 13-10 on the season.
Sophomore Andonis Petroutsas had a big weekend in the pool, but also joined a pair of teammates Oliver Finley (pict-L) and Austin Majus (pict-R) as they all joined Cuesta's Century Club with their 100th career goal. Petroutsas scored a dozen goals this weekend, including a goal with just 1:47 left in their tournament opening win over Grossmont to reach triple digits. He currently has 108 career goals. Finley scored his 100th when he completed his "Hat Trick" in the Cougars win over Ventura. He now how 102 career goals. Majus also pulled a "Hat Trick" against the Pirates and reached the Century Mark on his second goal of the game. He now has 101 career goals. Over the past 45 years only 39 players have scored 100 goals for Cuesta Men's Water Polo and more current players could join the club this season.
All American Center Jordan Northcutt has only played four games this season but scored 14 goals in that brief window. He currently owns 77 career goals at Cuesta and with, at least, nine games left in the regular season he could still return and join his brother with Johnny Northcutt (128 goals, 2020-22) as Cuesta's first brother combination in the club. Of course, former Cuesta Coach John Marsh (178 goals) and his son Eric Marsh (153 goals) still hold the family record on the men's side. Overall, the Cougars' all-time scoring family is the Porter Family. The Porter's Pater Familias is Kelly Porter, and he still holds Cuesta's single season (139 goals) and career scoring marks (221). His son Layne Porter added 45 goals and daughter Chloe Porter tallied 142 more for women's team to boost the Porter family to 408 goals at Cuesta College. All three Porters, in their time, have been chosen as recipients of Cuesta Athletics' oldest and most prestigious honor- the George Silveria Career-Student Athlete Award.
