It was a very productive weekend for the Cerritos College women's water polo team. The Falcons (5-1), who started the weekend with a double-overtime win over Ventura College, followed that by posting wins in three of their four games at the Cuesta Tournament. Cerritos dropped a 10-7 decision to West Valley College, but earned wins over Merced College (14-6), Fresno City College (16-6) and Ohlone College (15-1). The team will open South Coast Conference on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. when they host El Camino College.
West Valley vs. Cerritos: The tournament opened with the Falcons taking on one of the top teams from Northern California. They struggled out of the gate and trailed 3-1 after the first period and went into halftime down, 4-1. It was a 5-1 deficit in the third period until freshman Angelina Romero (Schurr HS) scored, with freshman Miranda Alvarez (Schurr HS) adding to the team's total in the final minute of the period. Goals by Alvarez and sophomore Mia Carbajal (Schurr HS) to start the fourth period drew the team to within 6-5, and the same pair scored to draw the game even at 7-7 with 4:02 remaining. However, the Falcons wouldn't be able to add to their total, while West Valley scored the final three goals of the game. Alvarez scored three times, while Carbajal and Romero scored twice. Sophomore Melodie Carbajal (El Rancho HS/Fullerton College) played a solid defensive game and had a game-high six steals, with freshman goalkeeper Leslie Meza (California HS) making six saves.
Merced vs. Cerritos: Taking on the Blue Devils in their second game of the day, the Falcons found their scoring touch earlier on. Mia Carbajal, along with Keyla Santos (Schurr HS) and Karina Oliveros (Downey HS) put the team up, 3-1 after the first eight minutes, while it was a five-goal second period that allowed them to cushion their lead. Alvarez and Mia Carbajal accounted for two goals each in before halftime, while the Falcons received goals from five different players in the second half to secure the victory. Mia Carbajal led the team with four goals, with Oliveros and Alvarez each scoring three times. Santos finished with four helpers, with Romero and Mia Carbajal each adding three. Meza played the first three periods and made six saves, with sophomore Haili Snook (Downey HS) taking over goalkeeping duties in the fourth period.
Fresno City vs. Cerritos: On the second day of the tournament, Romero broke out with a five-goal game in the win over Fresno City College and scored in each of the four periods. The Falcons shut out the Rams through the first eight minutes and were leading 6-0 in the second period before they got on the board. The big lead allowed other players to join in on the offense, as seven players scored at least once. Alvarez (four goals, four steals) and Mia Carbajal (three goals, five steals) had their usual good games, while Santos stepped in with four assists. Melodie Carbajal and Kaya Glynn (Cerritos HS) each had three steals on defense, while freshman Jillian Crockett (Cerritos HS) posted a trio of assists. All three goalkeepers saw action in the game, with Snook making three saves and sophomore April Nuno (Cerritos HS) playing the entire second half.
Ohlone vs. Cerritos: The Falcons wrapped up the tournament by nearly shutting out the Renegades. Aside from a late first period goal, Cerritos held Ohlone off the scoreboard the remainder of the game. Nine different players scored, with Romero and Mia Carbajal each finishing with three goals, while the duo of Santos and freshman Isabella Berdote (Cerritos HS) both added two goals. Santos and freshman Samantha Wisher (La Serna HS) posted four assists each, while Wisher was dominant on defense and recorded a season-high seven steals. Nuno and Meza were strong in goal and turned away a combined four shots.
