TAFT, CA – We are sure the Lady Cougars Basketball Team is thankful for a victory prior to the holiday break. Wednesday night, Taft College found themselves in a tough battle on the road against San Bernardino Valley College. With Taft Winning the first and third quarters, San Bernardino Valley won the second and fourth, making it not an easy win for the black and gold.
Taft defeated San Bernardino Valley 72-65 in a back-and-forth affair. The Cougars led most of the game. At one point, Taft led by as much as 13 points, but the Wolverines refused to give up closing the gap any time Taft seemed to be pulling away. The game was fairly evened out, but Taft would edge out San Bernardino Valley scoring 27 points off turnovers compared to the Wolverines' 17. Taft also outrebounded their opponent 51-49, while forcing 31 turnovers. Taft also had a season high of 22 steals.
"This team of ours is tough. Absolutely tough! The team effort is outstanding in every regard. Of course, there is room for improvement. When we minimize mental breakdowns and become more aware of game management and control, it's going to be a long night for our opponents. Madyn Kassatly is performing at a phenomenal level right now, and I am glad she is on our side because she is a nightmare for others," commented Taft Head Women's Basketball Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr.
Kassatly recorded her fourth double double of the season scoring a career high 29 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. She also shared a team high of 5 assists. Kassatly collected 3 steals. Alyah Blackwater had 17 points, 4 steals and also 5 assists. Amaya Payne chipped in with 8 points, a game high of 13 rebounds and 5 steals.
