Over the weekend, the Cerritos College men's water polo team recorded bookend wins at the Golden West Tournament. The Falcons opened with a 12-10 win over Sierra College on Friday, and after a couple of losses, they capped off the tourney with a big 8-6 victory over crosstown rival Long Beach City College. Three days earlier, Cerritos (14-10) was defeated by the Vikings (16-4), 17-8 in their South Coast Conference meeting. This Wednesday, the team will travel to Mt. San Antonio College for a 4:15 match, with the winner earning the #2-seed for the upcoming conference tournament.
In the victory over Sierra, the Falcons scored the final three goals of the second quarter to take an 8-6 advantage into halftime. Jacob Colon (Schurr HS), Christian Acosta (Schurr HS) and Declan Nelson (Corona HS) accounted for those goals, with Nelson coming with just eight seconds left on the clock. Acosta and Colon both scored in the third period for a 10-7 lead, and after Guillermo De La Mora (La Serna HS) opened the scoring in the fourth period, it was an 11-7 advantage.
However, the Wolverines battled back late in the game, as a 12-8 Cerritos lead closed to 12-10 when they scored twice. But that would be the final margin of victory for Cerritos.
Colon finished the game with four goals, while De La Mora assisted on three tallies and led the defense with five steals. The trio of Acosta, Johan Gaytan (Downey HS) and Tim Robles (Schurr HS) all scored twice, with goalkeeper Diego Campos (Downey HS) turning away nine shots.
Against the Vikings, Cerritos opened up a 3-0 lead in the second period, thanks to a pair of man-advantage goals. The lead was trimmed to 4-3 at halftime, and after Long Beach City started the third period with a pair of goals, they took their first lead of the day. Robles scored with a man advantage with 20 seconds left in the third period, as the teams went into the final eight minutes tied at 5-5.
Acosta and De La Mora scored 30 seconds apart in the fourth quarter to take a 7-5 lead, and with 1:36 left on the clock, Acosta scored the Falcons fifth man-advantage goal of the game to secure the win. Campos played a huge game in goal, as he recorded 13 saves, while Robles and Acosta each scored three times. Colon was instrumental in giving the Falcons as man power plays in the game, as he drew eight exclusions on the day.
