SBVC Picks Up Win in Home Opener

Four San Bernardino Valley College pitchers combined to strike out 12, while Cy Robertson's two-out double in the seventh inning broke the game open as the SBVC baseball team won its home opener Saturday afternoon, beating Los Angeles Mission College 10-4.

After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, the Wolverines' started off a rally with a strikeout. Melchor Flores swung and missed at strike three from pitcher Jose Ruedas, but the ball bounded away from catcher Jared Cantu, allowing Flores to reach first safely. Andrew Griffin followed with a bloop single to center and Michael McQueen walked to load the bases. Omar Rosas grounded a ball deep into the hole near second base, and all the Eagles' defense could do is force out McQueen allowing Flores to score to tie the game. Robertson followed with a bunt up the first base side that he nearly legged out, scoring Griffin. Then, with two outs, leadoff batter David Melton doubled to left to score Rosas.

After tacking on another run in the third, the Wolverines widened their lead in the fifth. Nathan Campos-Jaramillo reached and advanced to second on a throwing error. He promptly scored thanks to a two-strike double from Flores - who failed on two attempts to bunt him over. Flores went to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a sacrifice fly from McQueen.

The Eagles rallied for three in the sixth against reliever Daniel Cano. But in the seventh, the Wolverines put the game out of reach. Jose Ramirez led off with a single up the middle, and went to third as Jaramillo doubled down the left field line. After Flores struck out, Griffin was intentionally walked. McQueen followed with a grounder to third that was misplayed, allowing everyone to move up 90 feet. Rosas struck out, but on a 3-2 pitch Robertson blooped a ball to shallow right field that bounced in just in front a sliding Jonathan Zermeno, clearing the bases as Robertson went to second.

That was all SBVC would need. Starter Noe Ramirez struck out seven in four innings work, and Cano picked up the win, striking out three in two innings. Anthony Hernandez retired the three batters he faced in seven pitches in the seventh, and Salvador Villanueva shut the door, striking out two in two innings of work.

Griffin ended the game 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while Robertson was 2-for-4 with four RBI on the game. McQueen and Rosas both pitched in with two runs batted in apiece.
