Bottom Of The Lineup Carries Cañada Past Cabrillo
The bottom of the lineup helped the Colts capture a 7-4 victory over Cabrillo on Saturday at Cañada College. Freshman RF Justin Gladfelter, So. C Ethan Payne, and So. 3B Jacob Brewer combined for five of the team's nine hits in the victory scoring four runs and driving in five.
With Cañada down 2-0 in the bottom of the 4th, they took the lead after Brewer singled down the left field line, Payne doubled to center field, and So. 2B Chris Arce singled down the left field line, each scoring one run.
Four more Colt runs crossed the plate in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 7-2. An error scored one run, Gladfelter laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring one run, and Brewer homered to center field, scoring two runs.
Sophomore RHP Devin Bettencourt earned the win for Cañada. The starter allowed five hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out six and walking one. Freshman Mateo Rojas appeared in relief for Cañada in the 8th to close out the game. The RHP allowed 2 hits, 0 earned runs, 1 walk and 2 strike outs.
The Colts tallied nine hits in the game. Gladfelter and Brewer were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits. Brewer led the offense with three runs batted in from the number eight spot in the lineup. The third baseman went 2-for-4 on the day. Defensively, Cañada turned one double play in the game.
