Women’s Water Polo Collects Two Victories in GWC Tournament

Huntington Beach, Calif. - Golden West women's water polo  (9-4, 0-2 OEC) picked up two wins against Cerritos and East Los Angeles in the Golden West Tournament. 

9/22/2023 vs Cerritos, 17-8

Golden West Aquatics Center hosted a tournament as the Rustlers took on the Falcons and Huskies. In game one for Golden West, the Rustlers outplayed Cerritos College. The home team outscored the Falcons 6-3 in the first quarter and shutout out their opponent in the second frame to lead 11-3 at half. In the second half, Cerritos managed to battle back but would not be able to overcome their early deficit. 

Golden West won their first appearance against the Cerritos Falcons, 17-8. Daniella Jiron and Kira Posigian shared the top scoring title with three goals apiece. Bella Schulze, Lily Worley and Kayla Nieves tallied two goals each to contribute to the offense. Nathalia Johnston defended the net for all four quarters and saved seven shots from 15 attempts. 

9/22/2023 vs East Los Angeles, 14-3

For their second appearance, the Rustlers flexed their defensive abilities against the Huskies. Golden West shutout ELAC in the first eight minutes and took a 5-0 advantage. The Huskies would match the Rustlers offense in the second frame but be limited to one goal in the third. For the final frame, Golden West kept their opponent scoreless again to take home the win, 14-3. 

Bella Schulze led the team in scoring with her four goals to add to the offensive affair. Daniella Jiron, Ashley Hogan and Kira Posigian each found the net twice. Evelyn Teeter protected the net the entire matchup as she saved six shots off of nine opportunities. 

NEXT UP: Golden West will travel to Cypress for a conference matchup on Wednesday, October 4th.
