Mt. SAC Women’s Water Polo opens SCC with, 10-8, win over ELAC; Chong leads with five goals

(Monterey Park, CA) After opening the season with two mini tournaments, in which the Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo team was 2-3 in five games, the Mounties evened their record with an exciting, 10-8, win over host East Los Angeles College in the opening game of South Coast Conference action on Wednesday (Sept. 13).

In the opening College of Marin Invite, the Mounties defeated American River, 12-3, and lost to Sierra, 23-7, and Marin, 11-9.

They bounced back at the Palomar Mini Tournament with a win over host Palomar, 23-10, and fell to San Diego Miramar, 19-7.

In the opening SCC game at ELAC, the Mounties were led by 2-meter Elizabeth Chong (1 Steal) with five goals. The offensive outburst by Chong was the second of the early season with five goals by the sophomore. 

With two goals each were sophomore Jayde Gutierrez (2 Stls.) and freshman Gianna Gomez (1 Field Blk.). Freshman Viviana Gil (1 Steal) added a solo goal.

After two closely contested opening periods, during which the score was tied at 2-2 after the opening quarter and the Huskies held a slim 7-6 halftime lead, Mt. SAC scored four goals, and the defense shut out ELAC in the third quarter

Leading the charge in the third period was Chong with two goals.

In the nets, sophomore goalie Kelly Jackson stopped nine of 17 shots for the win.

The Mounties continue SCC action with their first home game on Wednesday (Sept. 20) in the new pool complex, as they host Chaffey.
