Pirates fall to Chargers in Super Regional opener

CYPRESS -- Good teams take advantage of opportunities and for the Orange Coast College softball team, the Pirates saw that firsthand as round second inning proved to be the difference in an 8-0 loss to the host Chargers on Friday in Game 1 of the Southern California Super Regional playoffs.

With the loss, the Pirates (27-14) need to sweep a doubleheader on Saturday against the defending state-champion Chargers (36-7) to advance to the State Tournament. Game 2 will begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday with Game 3 immediately to follow, if necessary.

In the bottom of the second, the Chargers had runners on second and third with two outs when Ashlynn Ortiz lined a single to right. The runner from third scored easily but it appeared that the second runner would be out on the play, but the throw from shallow right sailed over the catcher's head, putting the Chargers up, 2-0.

The next six batters reached base and before the inning was completed, Cypress carried a comfortable 6-0 lead.

While that was going in, Cypress starting pitcher Kaitlyn Reynolds took care of business, holding Coast to just two hits (singles from Isabel McElroy and Natalie Lowthers) and no runs before Cypress walked the game off in the bottom of the fifth with two runs to make it 8-0.
