Jets fly high as conference champs

CHULA VISTA, CA (11/4/2023) -- Last season, San Diego Miramar College made the tough decision to not have a season due to a lack of players, a year later, they're PCAC Champions after defeating Grossmont College 13-8 on Saturday afternoon.

The Jets flew through the conference schedule with ease setting them up for the No. 1 seed in the tournament and receiving a first-round bye. They then faced No. 4 and defending conference champs, Palomar College in the semifinals on Friday afternoon. The Jets made light work of the Comets winning the match 17-2 to seal their spot in the championship match. Their opponent: No. 3 Grossmont College.

Miramar got to work quickly and fired on all cylinders as they took an 8-3 halftime lead, but that was all they needed. The Griffins and Jets were in a 5-5 stalemate the entire second half. The Jets claimed their first conference title under first-time head coach Lucy Gates behind Nalani Galindo's six goals on five shots. Galindo finished with two assists and six steals. Emma Roberson finished the day with four goals on three shots and two assists. Chloe Fairchild recorded four assists in the championship match. Goalie Rylie Hage, one of the few players from the canceled season, had 13 saves on 21 shots. 

In the semifinal round, Erica Pircher and Roberson combined for eight goals, four a piece, while Galindo finished with three and Mina Brogdon had two. As a team, the Jets combined for 17 assists, including three each from Emma Fritz and Jordy Jordison. Galindo's defense helped propel the Jets to the victory as she finished with four steals and two blocks. Fairchild had three steals, an exclusion drawn and a block on the day. In the net for the Jets, Hage had 15 saves on 17 shots. 

Miramar finishes their regular season 20-5 overall and 7-0 in conference play. They will face No. 8 Cuesta College in the 3C2A SoCal Regionals at Citrus College on Thursday as the No. 9 seed.
