Gavilan Men’s Soccer wins third straight, closes week with 5-1 victory at Merritt

OAKLAND – Freshman Sergio Ruiz Ortega scored a pair of goals to help lead the surging Gavilan College men's soccer team to its third consecutive victory, a big 5-1 non-conference win at Merritt College on Friday.

Since dropping its season-opener 5-0 to Merced College on August 29, the Rams have been lighting up the scoreboard. On September 1, Gavilan earned its first win by cruising past College of the Redwoods 6-1. That was followed by a 9-0 rout of visiting Lassen Community College on Tuesday.

Gavilan has outscored its opponents by an impressive 20-2 margin over the three-game stretch.

Freshman Tony Moran currently leads the Rams in scoring with 5 goals. His two assists also give him a team-high 12 points on the season.

Moran had a huge game against Lassen, posting a hat trick with 3 goals and 2 assists. He also scored twice in the win over Redwoods.

The 3-1 Rams will look to keep the momentum going on Tuesday (Sep. 12) when they travel to Yuba College for a non-conference game.
