Pirates open conference play with strong win over Chargers

CYPRESS -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team came out strong and pulled out a 14-6 road win at Cypress College on Wednesday in the Orange Empire Conference opener for both teams.

The Pirates (5-0, 1-0 in the OEC) clamped down on defense throughout most of the contest and held the Chargers to single goals through the first three quarters while building up an 11-3 lead.

Jillian Duwe led Coast with four goals, two assists and three steals, while Ana Nardelli and Paige Woodside each tossed in two goals as well. The goalie tandem of Ella Walker and Emily Jones held the Chargers to just six goals with a combined 10 saves.

The Pirates will return to action this weekend at the Riverside City College Tournament, beginning on Friday morning. OCC's next home contest will take place on Wednesday against Riverside City College, beginning at 4 p.m.
