SOCAL RUNNERS OF THE WEEK
Diego Varela (So.)
Mt. San Antonio College
The Mountie sophomore and team leader posted a 17-second course personal best at the Cal State San Marcos Cougar Challenge. His time of 25:20 was tops for all community college runners in the field. Varela was the seventh runner on last year’s state runner-up team for Mt. SAC and has led the team in every race so far this season. Varela will look to lead this year’s Mountie squad to another state trophy finish.
Jocelyn Alba (Fr.)
Orange Coast College
Alba was the top community college finisher at the Biola Invitational, covering the 5km course in 18:37 and placing 13th overall. Alba emerged in week #1 with a 9th-place finish at the Clovis Crush Invitational and continued that momentum into the Biola meet. The former 5:18/11:03 high school performer is making an immediate impact for the Pirates in her first year.
NORCAL RUNNERS OF THE WEEK
Cameron Mobley (Fr.)
American River College
The Beavers have a contender for the Northern California individual title in freshman Cameron Mobley. Mobley won the Kyle Robinson Twilight 5000m in 15:05.4. The unique track race in the fall shows the 1:51 800-meter runner is developing stamina as he leads a strong American River College squad. Mobley has already clocked a 25:15 8km as well to start his freshman campaign for the Beavers.
Alejandra Magana-Ramirez (So.)
American River College
The sophomore standout for recent Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year Melanie Cleland is healthy and running strong. Magana-Ramirez contended for the win at the Kyle Robinson Twilight 5000m running a lifetime best 18:31.2. This was a 40-second personal best for the track distance and was just five seconds behind Week #1 ROTW Ericka Dorn. Last year’s seventh-place state finisher, Magana-Ramirez will look to give the Beavers a back-to-back All-American this fall.
