Bakersfield College coaching icon Carl Ferreira retires after 20 seasons
After 20 seasons at Bakersfield College as women's volleyball head coach, Carl Ferreira has retired his post.
Ferreira's career as a HC spans parts of four decades after starting first at the NCAA level with stops at the University of Idaho (1997-1999), then a brilliant run at Cal State Bakersfield (1994-1996) before directing the University of Oregon from 2000-2004.
Beginning at Bakersfield in 2005, Ferreira turned the program into a Southern California Region power as he guided the Renegades to six Western State Conference championships, 16 playoff appearances and three trips to the state championship tournament in 2009, 2018, and 2021.
His Bakersfield teams put together six 20-or-more win seasons including a spectular 25-2 year in 2018, including a 19-match win streak. The Renegades finished ranked #5 in the final CCCWVCA State Top 25 and Ferreira was named SoCal Coach of the Year.
In March-April, 2021, with many athletic programs in shut down due to the pandemic, Ferreira helped champion a mini Central Cali Bubble league of six colleges that allowed Bakersfield to compete, winning all nine of their contests while also earning AVCA 2-Year College Southwest Region Coach of the Year honors.
Later that year with the '21 regular season returning all teams to play, he directed the Renegades to a 22-2 season, another 19-match win streak, and his last trip to the 3C2A elite eight tourney plus a second #5 state final ranking.
Ferreira's career record at BC was 337-148 for a .695 winning percentage. Previously at Cal State Bakersfield, his teams compiled a dominating 100-13 record as one of the Division II top programs.
Among his many talented players at BC were First Team AVCA All-Americans in Sarah Armendariz (2018) and Aly Dees (2021), and Second Team All-Americans Caitlin Bernardin (2012) and Penelope Zepeda (2019). An assistant coach for Ferreira's final team in 2024, Zepeda now takes over as head coach of the Renegades for the upcoming 2025 season.
Known for his positive approach to coaching on and off the court, Ferreira finishes a coaching run that produced 528 victories at the CCC and NCAA levels.
