Palomar debuts at No. 1 in first CCCSIA women's basketball poll; Unbeaten Orange Coast is No. 2
SACRAMENTO - A pair of undefeated teams are perched atop the first California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) Women's Basketball poll of the season with Palomar (16-0) and Orange Coast (18-0) leading the way but the next five teams in the rankings hail from NorCal as the 2022-23 CCCAA season turns its attention to conference seasons that will determine the fate of teams' postseason aspirations.
The CCCSIA conducted its first state poll of the season, taking the baton from the California Community College Women's Basketball Association (CCCWBCA) which releases its state polls up until the start of conference competition. The CCCWBCA continues to release regional polls each week with Palomar leading SoCal this week and Fresno City (16-2) and Santa Rosa (14-2) tied for No. 1 in the north.
Palomar garnered eight first-place votes and 179 total points in the poll of sports information directors while Orange Coast picked up the remaining first-place tally and has 169 points. From there, NorCal took control with Fresno, Santa Rosa, College of the Sequoias (15-2), Butte (15-3), and 2022 state runner-up San Joaquin Delta (10-5) rolling through the next five positions. Perennial powers Moorpark (13-5) and City College of San Francisco (13-4) are tied for eighth place with 104 points, while poll regular Ventura (13-4) tallied 100 points to round out the top 10.
The next five seats are occupied by Mt. San Jacinto (15-2), Mt. San Antonio (12-6), Laney (14-3), Cypress (13-4) and Riverside City (13-5), while Folsom Lake (12-4), San Jose City (15-3), Long Beach City (10-6), defending state champion Sierra (9-7) and Irvine Valley (13-5) complete the top 20.
