CCCAA Track and Field Championships to be showcased at Mt. San Antonio on Friday and Saturday
WALNUT - After a hiatus since 2019, California Community College Athletic Association track and field athletes are coming together at Mt. San Antonio College’s Hilmer Lodge Stadium for state finals, Friday and Saturday (May 20-21). The national spotlight will be on Mt. SAC this weekend as USA Track & Field conducts its elite international Distance Festival at the spectacular rebuilt stadium on Thursday evening (7 p.m.)
MAY 20-21 SCHEDULE: CC athletes take the stage early Friday with the men’s decathlon, starting at 12 noon, and the women’s heptathlon, at 12 45 p.m. There will also be field event finals Friday afternoon in the women’s and men’s hammer throw (3 and 4 40 p.m.) and javelin throw (women at 5 p.m., men at 6 45 p.m.). Two distance race finals will be contested, at 10,000 meters, starting at 7 p.m.
SATURDAY competition again gets underway with the decathlon and heptathlon, at 10 a.m. Field event finals begin at 1 15 p.m. with the women’s discus throw. Running events start at 3 15 p.m. (3,000 meter steeplechase) and conclude at 7 40 p.m. (4 x 400 relay).
This Is an all finals competition, with qualifying from May 13 region meets at Chabot College and Moorpark College.
REGIONAL CHAMPIONS
NOR CAL WOMEN: Hartnell took the women’s title with 135 points, ahead of Coast Conference competitor De Anza (110 1/2), followed by Santa Rosa JC (81 1/2), Diablo Valley (60), Modesto JC (57 1/2), Colllege of the Redwoods (55), American River (46), and Chabot (45 1/2), with 22 teams scoring.
MEN: American River won the 100th year NorCal championship with 102 points, ahead of Big 8 Conference rival San Joaquin Delta (93), followed by Merritt (73, Diablo Valley (72), Modesto JC (71), De Anza (70 1/2), Hartnell (66), and College of San Mateo (63) – among 20 scoring teams. Modesto JC hosted the first NorCal championships on April 28, 1923.
SOCAL WOMEN: Mt. San Antonio total 148 points to win the women’s championship, ahead of Saddleback (87) and Riverside CC (85). Others included Cuesta (63), Cerritos 61), Ventura (49), and Bakersfield (48) – with 23 team scoring.
MEN: Mt. SAC completed a sweep of titles with 263 1/2 points, followed by San Diego Mesa (164) and Riverside CC (101 1/2).
Others: Orange Coast (42), Cerritos (40), Moorpark (36), West Los Angeles (28), El Camino (20) – with 23 teams scoring.
