LOS ANGELES — Sofia Gonzalez and Brianna Lopez-Cortez have been named California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association Players of the Week.
Gonzalez led San Bernardino Valley to a pair of wins as part of a three-game win streak for the Wolverines. Gonzalez dished a pair of complete-game wins, ending the week with a five-inning shutout win over Victor Valley. The sophomore struck out eight batters allowing just three hits and one walk in the 13-0 victory.
She opened the week with six strikeouts in an 8-3 win over Pasadena City while giving up just two earned runs. Her opponents had an average of just 0.163 against her. Gonzalez is a perfect 4-0 this season and ranks 21st in the state with 38 strikeouts. She has 128 career strikeouts at San Bernardino Valley.
Lopez-Cortez had an outstanding week at the plate, leading Feather River to a pair of wins over Reedley. During the stretch, the third baseman batted 7-8 (0.875 batting average), opening the series with three hits and a pair of runs in the 10-2 win. She was instrumental in the finale when she amassed four hits with three RBIs and two runs in the 9-5 win.
She's doing it all after battling back from ACL surgeries in each knee.
