Arenas drains school-record nine treys as College of San Mateo downs rival Foothill

SAN MATEO – Bobby Arenas sank a College of San Mateo record nine 3-point baskets and scored 28 points to lead the Bulldogs to an 81-70 Coast Conference North men’s basketball victory over visiting Foothill College Wednesday evening at College Heights gymnasium.
The 6-2 freshman guard out Archbishop Riordan (San Francisco) High School had seven of his three’s as CSM (9-10, 3-2 Coast North) took a 50-35 halftime lead. Foothill (11-7, 2-3) stormed back after the break with 17 straight points, ten by freshman guard Eric Norton (Menlo-Atherton) to put the Owls ahead, 52-50, holding San Mateo scoreless for nearly six minutes. Arenas got his eighth 3-pointer with 14:06 left to put CSM back on top, 53-52.
The two Peninsula foes exchanged baskets before the Bulldogs took the lead for good at 57-56 on a putback by forward Denzel McCollum (Serra) with 11:44 remaining. Jackie Luong (George Washington, San Francisco) sank his fourth 3-pointer to cap a McCollum-led 7-point run that put CSM up 71-63 with 4:39 left. Arenas got his ninth 3 with 2:17 left to put the Bulldogs in control at 76-65.
Luong and McCollum each scored 14 points and Bryant Jefferson had 12.
Norton led Foothill with 28 points to share game honors with Arenas, who connected on 9 of 12 long range attempts.
--Luong held the previous CSM 3-point record, sinking seven twice during pre-league play in wins over Monterey Peninsula and Cabrillo, which are currently the top two teams in the Coast South Conference.

Luong leads the Coast North with 73 3-pointers and Arenas is now No. 2 with 48.
This is the first time CSM has fielded a men’s basketball team in the modern 3-point era.
8TH RANKED FOE
This was the eighth team CSM opponent this season which has been recently state ranked and their first victory after several close games on a tough schedule. Foothill was ranked No. 27 in December.
The Bulldogs are now alone in fourth place in the tough Coast North (led by state top-ranked City College of San Francisco), just a game out of second.
