SAN MATEO – A battle of unbeatens - No. 3 City College of San Francisco at No. 1 College of San Mateo – is in the end of the regular season spotlight for most California Community College Athletic Association football teams Saturday. San Mateo continues to lead the poll of California Community College football coaches, conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau - with six first place votes and 268 points.
Ventura remains solidly in the No. 2 spot with 262 points after winning last week’s Northern League showdown with then No. 6 College of the Canyons, 19-7, and has clinched a state playoff berth. So has No. 6 Riverside City College, the reigning state champion, which has a 2-game lead in the Central League after edging Cerritos, 40-38, on a 36-yard field goal by Jacob Marroquin as time expired. No. 4 Golden West and No. 8 Fullerton will match their unbeaten Southern League records Saturday in Huntington Beach.
No. 5 Fresno CC secured the Valley League’s region berth, beating West Hills, 63-21. The NorCal League has a virtual 3-way tie after then No. 19 Sierra’s 42-34 double overtime win over now No. 12 American River. Sierra jumped to No. 14 this week and has the best RPI, also ahead of No. 11 Butte. CSM and CCSF hold the top two NorCal RPI spots. Both, therefore, should advance to the playoffs.
