San Mateo holds top spots in JC Athletic Bureau Poll over idle Riverside City; Top 5 still the same
September 8, 2021
SAN MATEO – College of San Mateo extended its regular-season winning streak to 11 games, starting its 100th football year with a 45-5 victory at preseason No. 16 Santa Rosa JC, and holds the top spot in the first regular-season weekly poll of California Community College football coaches conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau. The Bulldogs totaled 220 points to 212 for defending state champion Riverside City College.
Riverside remains in the No. 2 spot, although the Tigers were unable to start their season against neighbor Mt. San Jacinto, due to COVID issues at that opponent, and claimed a forfeit. Ventura College was a strong No. 3 in the poll with 199 points following an impressive 62-5 opening win over district rival Moorpark.
The remaining top ten teams in the preseason poll won their openers, including No. 4 Modesto in an intense regionally and nationally televised battle at PS No. 11 Laney, 35-28. San Mateo gets the regional TV spot (KOFY-TV 20) in the greater Bay Area Saturday afternoon against visiting No. 25 College of the Sequoias, which includes national cable exposure on NEXT LEVEL SPORTS (including on Directv and AT&T); also streamed on baosn.tv. Riverside will get a good test when it does open Saturday at No. 12 Long Beach, while Ventura hosts No. 16 San Diego Mesa. No. 4 Modesto entertains Sierra and No. 5 San Francisco hosts Sacramento.
The weekend schedule kicks off Friday night with West Hills finally getting underway after an opening week postponement, playing at No. 17 Diablo Valley.
