Softball: Pair of shutouts highlight day for Cerritos

Playing a pair of games at Cuesta College on Saturday, the Cerritos College softball team recorded a pair of shutouts, a they defeated Fresno City College (7-0) and the host Cougars, 8-0 in six innings. The Falcons (4-2, 0-1) will now travel south to take on Palomar College on Tuesday for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game.

Cerritos vs. Fresno City: Taking on the Rams for the first time since 2003, the Falcons scored in six of the seven innings on their way to a 7-0 victory. Cerritos turned to two pitchers who had not seen action yet to lead them to victory. Freshman Maddy Guillen (La Puente HS) tossed the first three innings and did not allow a hit, while striking out five batters. She was replaced by freshman Richere Leduc (California HS), who went the next three innings and scattered a pair of hits and struck out three. Freshman Samantha Islas (Roosevelt HS) pitched the final inning and recorded a pair of strikeouts.

At the plate, Cerritos got on board in the first inning when freshman shortstop Miranda Diaz (California HS) doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI double from freshman third baseman Brooklyn Bedolla (Mayfair HS). The Falcons loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning before freshman second baseman Alyssa Sotelo (El Rancho HS) drove in a pair with a base hit, her first of three in the game. Leduc, who started the game at first base, drove in the team's fourth run with a double in the third inning which plated Diaz, who led off the a walk.

Freshman outfielder Alyssa Capps (Downey HS) led off with fourth inning with a walk, stole second base and came home on a double from Sotelo. Freshman catcher Vicky Najera (El Rancho HS) added an RBI single in the sixth inning, with freshman pinch-hitter Emily Zuniga (Warren HS) driving in the final run on a ground out in the seventh, which brought in Leduc, who opened the inning with a walk.

Cerritos vs. Cuesta: Facing the Cougars, who are led by former Falcon shortstop Jenel Guadagno, who was a member of the 2008 state championship team, Cerritos earned an 8-0 win to close out the one-day trip. Locked in a tight 1-0 game through the first five innings, Cerritos scored seven times in the sixth inning, thanks to five Cuesta errors, in the top of the inning and went on for the six-inning mercy rule win.

Guillen led off by reaching on an error and after freshman outfielder Negasse Williams (Aliso Niguel HS) singled and freshman Angelica Gonzalez (Sierra Vista HS) walked, the Falcons had the bases loaded with no outs. Errors on the next two plays allowed a pair of runs to score, with Najera following with a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-0 lead. Diaz then doubled in a run, with another error allowing a fifth run of the game to score. Bedolla plated a run with the team's second sacrifice fly of the inning, and after the team batted around, Guillen drove in the final run with a single.

Freshman pitcher Courtney Callison (Santa Fe HS) won her second game of the season with a complete game shutout and limited Cuesta to just one hit and struck out five.
