Pirates cruise past Vikings in three

COSTA MESA -- Brisa Zepata-Reaves had 13 kills to lead the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team to a three-set sweep over visiting Long Beach City College on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Kingsley Mason contributed seven kills, Izzy Duchaine added six and Paige Cutwrigtht slammed down five as the Pirates improved to 9-2 for the year with a 25-13, 25-13, 25-22 nonconference win over the Vikings (1-8).

The OCC offense was on cruise control throughout most of the opening set as the Pirates ripped 12 kills in their first 18 points to jump out to an 18-8 advantage, never looking back the rest of the way. Mason had three kills over that span, while Zapata-Reaves, Brandlin and Cutwright each ripped two, as the Coast offense found success throughout the lineup.

Long Beach started out stronger in the second set as leading hitter Danika Iosua (11 kills) showed her abilities against the Pirates, but Coast turned an 8-6 lead into a blowout, thanks to a 14-4 run to push the advantage to 22-10.

The third set proved to be the toughest of them all for OCC as the hosts actually trailed 21-20 late before the Pirates regrouped and scored four of the final five points to victory.

OCC will return to Orange Empire Conference action on Friday at Golden West College, beginning at 6 p.m. OCC's next home contest will be on Wednesday against Cypress, also at 6 p.m.
