Spartans Come Up Short in Home Opener

MiraCosta College women's soccer team faced off against Mt. San Antonio in the season opener. Despite playing an even match in the first half, the Spartans fell short by a final score of 2-0.

The Spartans started the game with intensity and several opportunities were made by Zoe Mittlehauser and Katy King. Corner kicks were executed by  Aleah Minnich in the 26th minute, but the Spartans were denied by Mt. San Antonio's goal keeper.

At the 43rd minute, Mt. San Antonio  capatalized on a header, making the score 1-0. In the second half, the Spartans fired out of the gate strong. A free kick for Mt. San Antonio was present at minute 54, but was denied by the relentless effort of Casey Martinez, holding her defensive line strong. In the 67th minute  Mt. San Antonio gained possession in the 18 yard box and scored.

An opportunity arose for the Spartans at minute 76 as Lissete Bahena shot down the line and crossed the ball in, but the play fell short as the goalkeeper gained possession. Aleah Minnich struck the ball towards the goal in minute 89, but was unlucky as it went over the cross bar. The game ended with the young MiraCosta team competing until the final whistle.

The Spartans are next in action on Tuesday, August 31 at Santa Monica College.
