Softball: Roadrunners cruise to 8-0 win at Compton

COMPTON – Making her first start of the season in the circle for Rio Hondo College on Monday, freshman Brianna Ortega was dominant against Compton College in helping lead the Roadrunners to an 8-0, five-inning victory.

Ortega did not allow a hit while striking out five batters on her way to her first collegiate win. Compton reached base just three times after two walks and a hit batter, but two of those were quickly erased after a pair of double plays.

On offense, the Roadrunners scored at least one run over the five innings played. Leading 2-0, Rio Hondo blew the game open with a three-run, third-inning, thanks to a RBI-double by Jaclyn Santiago and a two-run single from Ashley Bravo.

The Roadrunners followed that with two more run in the fourth. Angelina Aldrete and Isabella Rojo both hit run-scoring singles and Aldrete closed out the scoring in the fifth when she knocked in Nadine Marquez with a single that brought the mercy-rule into effect.

Aldrete went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, Bravo (1 for 3) had 2 RBI, and Marquez was 2 for 3 with a pair runs to lead Rio Hondo at the plate.

The Roadrunners improved to 9-6 overall and 2-3 in South Coast Conference play. They are back in action on Thursday (Mar. 16) when they host Orange Coast College in a 3 p.m. non-conference game.
