Comets too much for Olympians, fall in overtime

Comets too much for Olympians, fall in overtime

After suffering their first defeat of the year, the SD Mesa College football team was looking to bounce back in the win column against Palomar College last night. However, in one of the most exciting games seen at Mt. Olympus, the Olympians suffered their second defeat of the season falling 17-18 in overtime to Palomar College. The Olympians were down 0-10 early in the game after Palomar's Dorian Richards 16 yard touchdown run followed by Landon Ogles' successful 30- yard field goal in the 2nd quarter.

The Olympians got on the board late in the 3rd quarter after a successful 20 yard field goal from Mauricio Escude bringing the score to 10-3. Both defenses buckled down and it wasn't until the 4th quarter when Mesa quarterback Richard Colmene took the team on a 10-play 80-yard drive culminating on an 8-yard pass to Brody Schicker which evened the game at 10-10.

The score would stay at 10-10 at the end of regulation as the game headed into overtime. San Diego Mesa College had first possession of the ball on Palomar's 25 yard line. The offense featured a heavy dose of Daniel Latanca capping a 7-play drive with a touchdown from the 1-yard line giving Mesa a 17-10 lead.

On the ensuing possession, the Mesa defense stopped 2 Palomar rushing attempts for no gain, bringing the game to a 4th and 4 from the Mesa College 8-yard line. Quarterback Thomas Fishburn moved the pocket to the right and threw across the field finding Frankie Goodson for the 8 yard touchdown pass bringing the score to Palomar 16, Mesa College 17.

The Comets originally lined up for the potential game tying field goal. Head coach Joe Early proceeded to call a timeout, which allowed the Mesa coaches to substitute their 'heavy' package on the possible 2-point attempt. The Comets hurried to the line of scrimmage, quickly snapping the ball, and Dorian Richards was able to break the line of scrimmage giving Palomar College the 18-17 win.

The Olympians now sit at 3-2 in the season and will travel to take on Saddleback College on October 15th.
