Baseball: Halted game goes 15 innings before Falcons win

On Thursday, the Cerritos College baseball team played 10 innings against host Santa Ana College, but no winner could be decided before darkness halted the game. The two teams were slated to face each other at Kincaid Field on Saturday, so it was decided that the first game would be completed before the start of the regularly scheduled game. In the second game, Santa Ana posted a 13-0 decision over the Falcons.

It was a 4-4 game through the first 10 innings before the game moved the Cerritos. Serving as the visitor in the game, the Falcons were unable to get a baserunner for four straight innings. On the other side, freshman relief pitcher Cade Sonoqui (Long Beach Millikan HS) surrendered hits in the 11th through the 14th innings. He was able to work out of a jam each time, as they game continued.

In the 15th inning, freshman designated hitter Nico Briones (Long Beach Millikan HS) led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second base by sophomore outfielder Jason Givens (Santa Fe HS). With one out, Briones ws able to move to third base on a passed ball, before sophomore third baseman Carlos Vega (Mary Star of the Sea HS/Los Angeles Harbor College) drove him in on a sacrifice fly, which turned out to be the winning run. Sonoqui held the Dons in check in the bottom of the 15th inning to secure the victory. The win was the first over Santa Ana since 2018 and the longest Falcons game since 1973.

Freshman starting pitcher Franky Lopez (Domnguez HS) tossed six scoreless innings to start the game, while the final two relief pitchers, sophomore Steven Salazar (Sonora HS) and Sonoqui combined for eight scoreless innings.

The second game of the day saw the Dons (5-4) take a 3-0 lead through the first three innings. Cerritos had runners in scoring position the first three innings, but could get come up with a key hit. The score remained that way until Santa Ana scored 10 runs over the final three innings.

Sophomore first baseman Dean Ormonde (Long Beach Millikan HS) slapped out three hits in the loss, while sophomore shortstop Julian Francois (Serra HS) and freshman designated hitter Ryan Skjonsby (Long Beach Poly HS) each added a pair of hits.

Cerritos travels to College of the Desrt on Tuesday for a 1:30 p.m. game.
