Cuesta Softball ended a five-game slide and picked up the team's first Western State Conference win with a walk-off, 8-inning triumph over Oxnard. Pitcher Leea Brown (pict) took the circle in the 5th inning and shutdown the Condors for 3 1/3 innings, before stroking a double into rightfield to score Brianna Burries (pict) to win the game. The 4-3 victory evened the Cougars' WSC record at 1-1 and improved the team's overall record to 9-14 on the season. The game was tight all the way through, with both teams scoring in the 1st inning and, after a short-lived Oxnard lead in the 3rd, both teams were knotted at 3-3 at the end of regulation. In the top of the 8th inning, Oxnard was on the verge of victory with two runners in scoring position and only one out, but a rundown turned into a double-play and the Cougars went to their final at-bat unscathed. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Burries led off with a Double and then scored on Brown's Bingle two batters later to win the game, 4-3. Seven of the Cougars' nine batters enjoyed a hit on the day, but Catcher Katelin Eccles did the bulk of the damage. Eccles went 2-for-2, including a Double, and was walked twice. She also both scored and drove in a run.
The Cougars continue their Western State Conference schedule when they host Moorpark this Thursday (2:30). The Raiders are currently undefeated in WSC play.
