In JC baseball anything can happen. Friday was one of those days as the Ventura College baseball team scored six runs without a hit in the sixth inning to break open a 5-2 game en route to their 11-5 victory over Fullerton at Pirate Park. Max Flame gave up one earned run over the first four frames, and Ryan Sweeney pitched a scoreless fifth to pick up the win for VC (2-3). Casey Turturici led the Pirates at the plate with a pair of hits, two runs batted in and a run scored.
Fullerton plated one run in the top of the first before Ventura had an answer in the bottom half of the frame. Yeongjun Jang led off with a walk, and Reiss Calvin followed with another base-on-balls. John Oleson sacrificed he two ahead 90 feet and Turturici had an RBI single for a 1-1 game.
VC used free bases to score another run in the second inning. Anthony Arancibia-Mundy, Ramon Torres and JR Godinez all walked to load the bases with no outs, and Jang grounded out after a pitching change to score another run for the Pirates.
The Hornets tied things up in the top of the third inning, and Ventura went ahead for good in the bottom of the fourth. Arancibia-Mundy reached first base on an error, then moved to second on Torres' groundout. Godinez followed with a double to score the unearned run and the Pirates led 3-2.
Calvin singled to open the fifth inning for VC and a\moved all the way to third base on a throwing error. Oleson followed a sacrifice fly to score Calvin. Turturici then singles, and moved to third on Connor Vogel one-base hit. Ewan Ferguson followed with a ground ball out to first and Turturici scored for a 5-2 advantage.
The Pirates broke things open in the sixth inning, without a base hit. Torres reached first on an error then stole second. Godinez moved to first on another error and Jang was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Calvin made it to first on another error, scoring a run, and Oleson and Turturici drew walks for two more scores. Vogel hit into another error for a run and Ferguson was hit by a pitch to force in another run. After a pitching change and a force out at home, Torres hit into a fielder's choice at second, scoring the sixth run of the inning without a the ball leaving the infield.
The Pirates yielded a score in the seventh inning, and two more runs in the eighth, but Sebastian Garcia came in to strike out the side in the ninth for the 11-5 win.
VC next travels to Glendale on Saturday Feb. 5 for a 12:00 pm start against the Vaqueros.
